ICT Course for Meteorological Services at the RTC Korea

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) organized an education course on Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) for Meteorological Services at the RCT Korea in Seoul from 14 to 17 April, in which 19 people from 11 NMHSs in Asia and Africa participated.?The course was designed to strengthen the capabilities of developing countries in the field of data collection and exchange, data quality control and numerical prediction models.?As part of the Global Capacity Building Program by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), it has been held every year since 2007 in cooperation with the KMA.?"The KMA's development in weather services building on the advanced ICT can be a good example for developing countries. It is expected ICT advancement could contribute to not only improved meteorological services but disaster risk reduction through this course", said Mr. KIM Jongseok, Administrator of the KMA.

Extremely severe cyclonic storm?Fani made landfall close to Puri in Odisha on 3 May, with maximum sustained wind speeds of?180-190 km/h. It is forecast to track?North-North Eastwards and weaken?as it moves towards West Bengal and then on to Bangladesh, according to the Indian Meteorological Department.

Tropical Cyclone Kenneth made landfall in northern Mozambique?on 25 April, near the border with Tanzania, in an area where no?tropical cyclone has been observed since the satellite era. There is?no record of two storms of such intensity striking Mozambique in the?same season.?Torrential rainfall in the days following the cyclone worsened the problem and hampered humanitarian operations.

One week before Iranian New Year beginning on March 21, the provinces bordering to the Caspian Sea and those provinces in the west of Iran experienced unprecedented severe rainfall that resulted in breaking the records of the maximum daily rainfall in 8 stations of the exposed area in March and April.
