Papua New Guinea National Weather Service launched Strategic Plan

Mr Roy Mumu, Secretary for the Department of Transport officially launched the National Weather Service?s Strategic Plan (2019-2023).? The launching event is part of the Second Workshop of the CREWS Papua New Guinea Project?s Stakeholders Consultation. The Strategic Plan is the first ever plan for the NWS. It is aligned with Department of Transport Mid-Term Plan 2 and the Government of PN Vision 2050 Statement Pillars of Development, the National Government Mid-Term Development Plan (2018-2022), and the Pacific Island Meteorological Strategy Plan (PIMS) 2017-2026). Mr Mumu congratulated the NWS for the great achievement.

On the night of October 9, the 162-day International Horticultural Exhibition 2019 Beijing, hereinafter referred to as Beijing Expo 2019, was officially concluded. This year?s event is a grand one, affiliated as the Expo of the largest scaled and highest level exhibition. China?s Meteorological departments have proactively pushed forward the entry of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) into the Expo, built the ECOMETEO exhibition area, and provided awesome and considerate meteorological services.??The ECOMETEO exhibition area, organized by Beijing Municipal Meteorological Service, is sponsored jointly by WMO and China Meteorological Administration (CMA). Under the theme of the Expo, there are four exhibition areas, namely ECOMETEO Pavilion, WMO Park, ECOMETEO observation demonstration station, and Expo 2019 Meteorological Centre. Through the ten exhibition themes, the Pavilion tries to explain the relationship among meteorology, horticulture and life and the importance of meteorology in building a beautiful China and the world. It also aims to convey the idea that clear waters and green mountains are as good as mountains of gold and silver. And climate change is closely linked to human civilization.

2019 Southwest Monsoon Season Rainfall and IMD’s Long Range Forecasts

The 2019 southwest monsoon season comes to end with above normal seasonal (June to?September) rainfall. Quantitatively monsoon seasonal rainfall was 110% of its Long Period?Average, which is 88 cm. Out of 36 meteorological subdivisions, 2 sub divisions received large?excess, 10 received excess and 19 sub divisions received normal monsoon rainfall. Out of 36 sub?divisions, 5 sub divisions however received deficient rainfall, but deficiency was in 20s except?for Haryana, Delhi and Chandigarh where the deficiency was 42%. The 5 sub divisions?accounted about 15% of total area of the country. On an average, about 20% of area of the?country receives deficient or scanty rainfall during the monsoon season.

The roles of National Meteorological Services are the key to inform appropriate actions before and during hazardous event, such as the recent drought-induced fires and smoke episode in the western maritime continent area. The Agency for Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) is working closely with partner authorities in efforts to prevent and extinguish fires and also mitigate its impacts.
