Since December 2019, eastern and western Japan have seen significantly above?normal temperatures, and the Sea of Japan side of the country has experienced?record-low snowfall.?These climate extremes are attributed to weaker-than-normal southward cold air-flow?to Japan?s main islands and synoptic climate conditions characterized by nonpersistence?of typical winter pressure patterns around Japan. These phenomena may?be attributable to a northward meandering of the subtropical jet stream over and?around Japan and a persistent positive phase of the Arctic Oscillation.

COMS Retirement Information - Korea Meteorological Administration

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) is going to retire Korea?s first geostationary meteorological satellite, COMS, or Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite. The COMS? meteorological imager (MI) will be terminating its observation on 31 March 2020 at UTC 23:59. The COMS, located at 128.2 ?E and operated by KMA, was launched on 26 June 2010 and started its official operation on 1 April after its 10-month in-orbit test. It was operated two years longer than its seven-year design lifespan and finally, its meteorological mission is about to reach the end-point after nine years of operation history.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 29.2?C which occurred on the 4th January at Bahrain International Airport and goes on record as the third highest maximum temperature for January since 1946 and only exceeded by 23rd January 1953 with a record of 31.7?C and 31st? Mr Roy Mumu, Secretary for the Department of Transport officially launched the National Weather Service?s Strategic Plan (2019-2023).? The launching event is part of the Second Workshop of the CREWS Papua New Guinea Project?s Stakeholders Consultation. The Strategic Plan is the first ever plan for the NWS. It is aligned with Department of Transport Mid-Term Plan 2 and the Government of PN Vision 2050 Statement Pillars of Development, the National Government Mid-Term Development Plan (2018-2022), and the Pacific Island Meteorological Strategy Plan (PIMS) 2017-2026). Mr Mumu congratulated the NWS for the great achievement.

Under the theme of the Expo, there are four exhibition areas, namely ECOMETEO Pavilion, WMO Park, ECOMETEO observation demonstration station, and Expo 2019 Meteorological Centre. Through the ten exhibition themes, the Pavilion tries to explain the relationship among meteorology, horticulture and life and the importance of meteorology in building a beautiful China and the world. It also aims to convey the idea that clear waters and green mountains are as good as mountains of gold and silver. And climate change is closely linked to human civilization.
