Policies put the EU on track to meet its 2020 climate and energy targets but bigger push needed for 2030

28.10.2014|Vreme

European Union (EU) greenhouse gas emissions fell almost 2 % between 2012 and 2013, putting the EU very close to its 2020 reduction target, according to new analysis from the European Environment Agency (EEA). The EU is also on track to meet two other targets to boost renewable energy and energy efficiency by 2020.

South East Europe Builds Resilience to Natural Hazards

27.10.2014|Vreme

A new cross-border multi-hazard early warning system will be developed in the Western Balkans and Turkey to increase resilience to floods, landslides, droughts and heat-waves which often hit the region and to build on the lessons learnt from the devastating floods of May 2014.
Authorities from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Turkey, and Kosovo agreed to establish a region-wide approach to build resilience to disasters and climate change adaptation at the conclusion of a two-year project implemented by the United Nations in collaboration with national counterparts and suppported by the European Union.

Jan-Sept temperatures break records

22.10.2014|Vreme

The global average temperature over land and ocean surfaces for September 2014 was the highest for the month since record keeping began according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). January-September tied with 1998 as the warmest such period on record.

World Food Day — Family Farming

16.10.2014|Vreme

The 2014 World Food Day theme - Family Farming: “Feeding the world, caring for the earth” - has been chosen to raise the profile of family farming and smallholder farmers. It focuses on the significant role of family farming in eradicating hunger and poverty, providing food security and nutrition, improving livelihoods, managing natural resources, protecting the environment, and achieving sustainable development, in particular in rural areas.
The latest assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlights that all aspects of food security are potentially affected by climate change, including food production, access, utilization, and price stability.

Extreme weather driving countries to adapt to climate change

14.10.2014|Vreme

Adapting to climate change has reached the political agenda in most European countries, according to the most comprehensive analysis of adaptation in Europe published to date. Extreme weather events and EU policies were the most common reasons for beginning to address adaptation.

WMO/Oman International Workshop on Tropical Cyclone Forecasting

8.10.2014|Vreme

The Sultanate of Oman and WMO sponsored a workshop to improve operational tropical cyclone forecasting and warning, through providing training for forecasters in the most up-to-date techniques.

Climate-forcing F-gases – new report published

29.9.2014|Vreme

Fluorinated gases (F-gases) are emitted into the atmosphere in relatively small quantities, but their effect on climate change is increasingly significant. These substances are very powerful greenhouse gases, with a warming effect thousands of times greater than CO2 in many cases.

Thematic Session on Climate Science

25.9.2014|Vreme

The UN Climate Summit brought together a hundred Heads of Governments, alongside the financial world, business and civil societies to give new momentum to the search for answers to the challenges posed by climate change.
During the summit on 23 September, the World Meteorological Organization was one of the sponsors of a Thematic Session on Climate Science to showcase how high-quality scientific information can support decision-making on climate change mitigation and adaptation. The U.N. Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and U.N. Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) were co-sponsors.

Arctic sea ice one of lowest on record

25.9.2014|Vreme

The area of sea ice in the Arctic fell to a summer minimum of around 5.0 million square kilometres this year. This is the sixth lowest extent in the satellite record and reinforces the long-term downward trend in Arctic ice extent, according to leading international scientific and research bodies.
The findings were released by the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) and the Alfred-Wegener-Institut Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research.
On September 17, 2014, sea ice extent dropped to 5.02 million square kilometers (1.94 million square miles), according to NSIDC. This appears to have been the lowest extent of the year. In response to the setting sun and falling temperatures, ice extent will now climb through autumn and winter. However, a shift in wind patterns or a period of late season melt could still push the ice extent lower.

WMO: Still Time to Act on Climate Change

19.9.2014|Vreme

There is still a window of opportunity to prevent dangerous climate change and preserve the planet for future generations. But it is closing fast, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which says that the urgent need to cut greenhouse gases is based on overwhelming scientific evidence.

Workshop on weather- and climate services in the LDCs in Asia

17.9.2014|Vreme

The Royal Kingdom of Bhutan hosted a WMO Regional Workshop on the provision of weather- and climate-related services in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in Asia, in Thimphu from 9 to 11 September 2014. The workshop brought together participants from National Meteorological and Hydrological Services of eight Asian LDCs, namely, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Nepal, Myanmar and Yemen. These countries belong to the WMO Regional Association II (Asia) and have varying climate conditions, from the high mountain regions in the North to the coastal in the South, including also some landlocked countries.

Record Greenhouse Gas Levels Impact Atmosphere and Oceans

9.9.2014|Vreme

he amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere reached a new record high in 2013, propelled by a surge in levels of carbon dioxide. This is according to the World Meteorological Organization’s annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin, which injected even greater urgency into the need for concerted international action against accelerating and potentially devastating climate change. The Greenhouse Gas Bulletin showed that between 1990 and 2013 there was a 34% increase in radiative forcing – the warming effect on our climate – because of long-lived greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane and nitrous oxide.

Weather reports for the future

4.9.2014|Vreme

The World Meteorological Organization is releasing a series of imaginary – but realistic - 2050 weather reports from well-known television presenters designed to sensitize people about the local impacts of climate change.
The report from Japan is set in September 2050. NHK presenter Hiroko Ida focuses on a prolonged heat-wave which has caused a record number of heat-related deaths; the bleaching of coral reefs due to rising ocean temperatures and acidification; and the risk of super-typhoons influenced by a warmer atmosphere and rising sea levels. The video also discusses the wider impact of global warming and the need to cut emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases.
