Caribbean rolls out multi-hazard preparations for hurricane season
2.6.2021|Vreme
The Caribbean is gearing up for yet another active Atlantic hurricane season, compounded by the continuing challenges and constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing potential for further significant eruptions from the La Soufriere volcano located on the island of St. Vincent which erupted in April 2021.
The triple whammy of hydro-meteorological, health and geological risks has highlighted the need to further enhance multi-hazard early warning system on vulnerable climate sensitive Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) on the front-line of climate change and its many...

1.6.2021|Okolje
The annual Bathing Water report published today shows that in 2020, almost 83 % of Europe’s bathing water sites met the European Union’s most stringent ‘excellent’ water quality standards. The latest assessment (European bathing water quality in 2020), put together by the European Environment Agency (EEA) in cooperation with the European Commission, is based on the 2020 monitoring of 22 276 bathing sites across Europe. These cover the EU Member States, Albania and Switzerland throughout 2020.

Geneva, 1st June 2021 (WMO) - The 2020-2021 La Nin?a event has ended and neutral conditions (neither El Ni?o or La Ni?a) are likely to dominate the tropical Pacific in the next few months, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Air temperatures are expected to be above average between June and August, especially in the northern hemisphere.
There is a 78% chance of neutral conditions in the tropical Pacific until July, decreasing to 55% by August-October, and with more uncertainty for the rest of the calendar year, according to WMO?s El Ni?o/La Ni?a Update.

Major drop in EU's greenhouse gas emissions in 2019, official data confirms
31.5.2021|Okolje
Greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union (EU) decreased by almost 4 % in 2019, according to latest official data, published today by the European Environment Agency (EEA). These data confirm the EEA’s preliminary estimates, published in October 2020. The large decline in emissions, achieved before the COVID-19 crisis, was mainly due to reduced coal use for power generation.

New climate predictions increase likelihood of temporarily reaching 1.5 °C in next 5 years
27.5.2021|Vreme
Geneva, 27 May 2021 (WMO) - There is about a 40% chance of the annual average global temperature temporarily reaching 1.5?C?above the pre-industrial level?in at least one of the next five years ? and these odds are increasing with time, according to a new climate update issued by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
There is a 90% likelihood of at least one year between 2021-2025 becoming the warmest on record, which would dislodge 2016 from the top ranking, according to the Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update, produced by the United Kingdom?s Met Office, the WMO lead...
Space observations support sustainable development

Space-based observations are key to achieving the international agenda on sustainable development, disaster risk reduction and climate change and it is thus imperative to ensure there is a stable and sustainable space-environment.
This was one of the take-home messages of a high-level panel event on civil space issues organized by the French diplomatic mission to Geneva and hosted by the World Meteorological Organization. It brought together the heads of WMO, the International Telecommunications Union, UN Office on Outer Space Affairs and the European Space Agency, as well as the Chief...

NOAA?s?Climate Prediction Center?forecast a 60% chance of an above-normal season, a 30% chance of a near-normal season, and a 10% chance of a below-normal season. However, experts do not anticipate the historic level of storm activity seen in 2020.?
For 2021, a likely range of 13 to 20 named storms (winds...
Arctic assessment report shows faster rate of warming
20.5.2021|Vreme
New observations show that the increase in Arctic average surface temperature between 1979 and 2019 was three times higher than the global average during this period ? higher than previously reported - according to the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP).
Climate change impacts on Arctic communities, ecosystems and species, especially when associated with extreme events, are considerable and accelerating. Sea ice loss, glacier retreat and reduced snow cover remobilizes previously deposited contaminants. While climate change is mainly driven by carbon dioxide emissions,...
Energy pathway to net zero by 2050
18.5.2021|Vreme
The world has a viable pathway to building a global energy sector with net-zero emissions in 2050, but it is narrow and requires an unprecedented transformation of how energy is produced, transported and used globally, the International Energy Agency said in a new landmark special report.
Climate pledges by governments to date ? even if fully achieved ? would fall well short of what is required to bring global energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to net zero by 2050 and give the world an even chance of limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5??C, according to the new...
